Kamloops cancer care centre on track for 2028 opening: BC Cancer Foundation

KAMLOOPS – BC Cancer Foundation’s lead for the Interior says plans are in motion for the long-anticipated Kamloops cancer care centre and the project is on track to open its doors in 2028.

Pardeep Khrod, AVP and Interior lead for the BC Cancer Foundation, says the project is now in the request-for-proposal (RFP) phase.

“Two companies have been asked to now apply in the RFP process and it looks like that will be completed and construction will start in spring of 2025 with the cancer center opening in 2028,” said Khrod.

The Kamloops cancer care centre’s completion in 2028 is later than the goal of patients receiving treatment in 2027 as outlined by Health Minister Adrian Dix in May last year.

The AVP says she’s been travelling to Kamloops more often as the committee gets closer and closer to a shovel in the ground. Khrod’s role with BC Cancer Foundation is now working to raise $5 million toward state-of-the-art technology like the three radiation machines slated for the centre, which Khrod anticipates will be in even greater demand once up and running.

“What we know is one-in-two individuals will hear the words, ‘You have cancer,’” said Khrod.

Khrod added that in the next 20 years, in Kamloops, the incidence of cancer is expected to rise by 33 per cent, due to a growing and aging population.

“In Kamloops alone, by bringing this cancer centre here and by bringing radiation therapy here, that means people will not have to travel to Kelowna to get that radiation therapy, which is an essential treatment for cancer care.”
