KAMLOOPS — At the halfway point of 2024, the Kamloops building sector has seen more than double the construction value than the same timeframe last year.

New numbers released by the City of Kamloops Building Inspection Division show $189.8 million in permit activity as of June 2024, more than double the $92.2 million as of June 2023.

In total, 462 permits have been approved throughout the first six months of 2024, down from 527 during the same timeframe last year.

Despite seeing fewer permits in June 2024, the value was on par with the same month last year. The Building Inspection Division show $27.1 million in permit activity in June, just below the $27.4 million during the same month in 2023.

The report shows 55 residential units were approved in June 2024, up from 13 in 2023. At the halfway point of the year, 329 units have been approved compared to 132 in 2023.

The City saw $18.7 million in residential construction value in June, nearly triple the value of $6.9 million from the same month last year. One permit for a multi-family build – three or more units – was worth $16 million.

However, the commercial permit activity for the month was drastically lower. The $8.2 million value over 12 permits in June 2024 is less than half of the $18.5 million over 13 permits during the same month last year.
