Financial assistance opens for Savona residents deluged by long weekend flash flood
SAVONA, B.C. — Disaster Financial Assistance (DFA) is now available for Savona residents who were soaked by flash flooding over Canada Day long weekend.
The Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD) says 20 homes were affected after a thunderstorm brought heavy rainfall on June 30. The flash flooding also caused Highway 1 through the community to close for multiple hours.
In a news release, B.C.’s Ministry of Emergency and Climate Readiness states DFA may compensate for repairs to a principal home, replacement of essential personal effects, cleanup and debris removal.
DFA is available to homeowners, renters, business owners, farmers, corporation-owned properties and charitable organizations who were unable to obtain insurance to cover disaster-related losses. However, the ministry states DFA is unable to compensate for losses for which insurance was reasonably and readily available.
