Mandatory water conservation notice issued for Spences Bridge community water system

The Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD) and Cook’s Ferry Indian Band (CFIB) on Tuesday (July 16) issued a mandatory water conservation notice for the Spences Bridge community water system.

All outdoor watering must be ceased until further notice.

Hand watering of vegetable gardens may continue by hose with a spring-loaded nozzle.

A TNRD press release said the notice is due to water usage exceeding production capacity, resulting in the depletion of the water system wells.

Further steps may be necessary if water consumption is not reduced by customers, according to the press release.

The notice is unrelated to active wildfires in the Spences Bridge area, according to the press release.

The Spences Bridge community water system serves about 135 customers within TNRD Electoral Area “I” (Blue Sky Country) and portions of the CFIB.

The area within the community water system boundaries is not at risk and no evacuation alerts or orders are in place for this area as of Tuesday afternoon, notes the release.

If structural protection is required, responding agencies, including the BC Wildfire Service, can draw water from other sources, including surface water from the Thompson River.

The TNRD and CFIB are working to expand water production capacity and updates will be provided as the situation changes, according to the release.
