KAMLOOPS — The 18th annual Gardengate Summer Salsa Challenge is scheduled for Aug. 23 in Brocklehurst.

Eight or more teams will produce samples of their salsa recipes for public tasting at the event, which is slated to run from 12:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Gardengate (915 Southill St.).

People’s Choice and Team Spirit Awards will be doled out after votes are tallied, along with the Chef’s Choice Award.

The event is free to attend and will include a photo booth, garden tours, live music and food.

Gardengate was formed in 1999 to address food security and opportunities for those with mental health issues.

Managed by non-profit Open Door Group in co-operation with the Kamloops Food Policy Council, its mission is “growing food and futures through diverse and supportive programs for persons with disabilities while contributing to the health and wellness of our community,” according to a news release.

Gardengate donates nearly 20,000 pounds of organic produce to local charities each year, according to the release.
