PETERS: Americans to choose between doddering and downright repugnant

Jul 12, 2024 | 12:30 PM

WHEN AMERICANS GO TO THE POLLS in November, we can expect perhaps the lowest turnout in the history of that country.

Who do they have to vote for?

On one side is President Joe Biden, a man who, it is becoming more and more clear, should be riding off into the sunset of his working life.

On the other side is Donald Trump, a man who should be in jail.

For anyone who has had a relative enter the early stages of cognitive decline, watching Biden must seem very familiar.

Biden has been in public life for more than 50 years, so he has a long record of speaking appearances.

What we’re seeing now is a far greater propensity for gaffes and cognitive slippage.

The next four years could see the president descending down an even steeper slope.

But then there is former president Trump, himself prone to oratorial gaffes and other baffling departures from the world of internal coherence.

Add to that a complete lack of moral compass and a propensity to commit felonies and we have a Republican nominee who better represents cartoon villainy than conservative ideals.

Personally, I’ll take a doddering elder over a convicted felon every time, but neither of these is an inspiring choice for our closest neighbour, our most important trading partner and a world superpower.

It appears the tide is turning for the Democrats, with more and more calling on Biden to step aside. Momentum will likely swing far enough for that to happen before it becomes a nasty intra-party battle.

For the Republicans, Trump is the nominee. That’s not changing.

Those within the party who call for him to step aside are marginalized and the man’s immense ego will prevent him from making that decision himself.

Every political party dubs every election as the most important election in our lifetime.

In this case for our neighbours to the south, it might be right.

It’s just too bad the choices range from uninspiring to downright repugnant.
