KAMLOOPS — Several Thompson-Okanagan and Cariboo organizations are among recipients of Outdoor Recreation Fund of BC grants.

The Outdoor Recreation Council of BC revealed its inaugural grant winners on Tuesday (July 9), with a total of about $250,000 dispersed between 30 organizations.

“The overwhelming number of applications and the diverse range of high-quality projects demonstrate the deep commitment of volunteer-led recreation groups, First Nations and local governments to enhancing and preserving our outdoor spaces,” Louise Pedersen, executive director of ORCBC, said in a press release.

“We are excited to see the positive impact these grants will start have on communities in B.C.”

Thompson-Okanagan recipients include Nickel Plate Nordic Centre ($5,000), Elevation Outdoors Experiential Programs Association ($6,500), Simpcw First Nation ($10,000), Hope Mountain Centre for Outdoor Learning ($10,000), Coquihalla Summit Snowmobile Club ($9,840), Grasslands Conservation Council of BC ($3,000) and Back Country Horsemen of British Columbia ($4,200).

Cariboo recipients include Williams Lake Cycling Club ($5,000) and Williams Lake First Nation ($10,000).

The ORCBC helps to address the need to support volunteer-based organizations and community groups that are crucial in maintaining and building trails and other recreational infrastructure, protecting and restoring natural areas and delivering programs that make outdoor recreation accessible and safe, according to the release.

In May of 2023, the Province contributed $10 million to ORCBC, establishing the first-ever endowment fund of its kind in B.C.

The fund will generate income to fuel an annual grant program administered by ORCBC, according to the release.
