KAMLOOPS — A temperature record that stood for more than 100 years appears to have been broken in Kamloops on Sunday (July 7).

According to historical data recorded at Kamloops Airport, Environment Canada says the preliminary maximum temperature of 38.3 degrees Celsius on Sunday beat the previous July 7 record of 35.6 set back in 1906. The weather agency says records in the Kamloops area have been kept since 1890.

Multiple communities in B.C.’s Interior also set new daily maximum temperature records for July 7.

In the Cache Creek Area (Ashcroft), Environment Canada say a preliminary high of 40.3 degrees Celsius was recorded, which would smash the 36.9 degrees set in 2015.

Lytton wasn’t far behind by reaching a daytime high of 39.9 degrees, up from 38.9 set in 1953.

Other new preliminary records include Clinton at 32.6 (32 in 2017), Lillooet at 38.8 (38.4 in 2015), Merritt at 35.7 (35.6 in 2015) and Williams Lake at 31.9 (31.1 in 2017).

Environment Canada notes the summary may contain preliminary or unofficial information and does not constitute a complete or final report.

A heat warning remains in effect for regions such as the 100 Mile, Cariboo, North Thompson, Nicola, Shuswap and South Thompson.

Environment Canada is expected to provide an update on the heat wave Monday.
