KAMLOOPS — The ballot in the newly shaped riding of Kamloops Centre is filling up, with the BC NDP acclaiming Kamal Grewal as the party’s candidate, joining incumbent Peter Milobar of BC United, BC Conservative candidate Dennis Giesbrecht and the Green’s Randy Sunderman.

This will be Grewal’s first foray into the political world. A former international student advisor at TRU World, the NDP candidate sees this election as a opportunity for her to make a difference and be an advocate for Kamloops residents.

“Yes, it would really amazing to be able to win this community and be able to go sit at the table where the decisions are being made right now. But my focus — I’m not in this just to win. I’m in this to truly service people because that is what gives me the joy. And (BC Conservative Leader John) Rustad and (BC United Leader Kevin) Falcon don’t necessarily have a lot of policies and plans that I feel can benefit our community here,” said Grewal.

It’s likely that the election will be decided on three key policies — health care, housing and street issues.

Grewal believes voters need to trust in the work being accomplished by the current government to invest in those areas in Kamloops through the cancer care centre and the recent announcement of 500 new homes.

“There is a crying need for all of us to be able to stand together and support the policy initiatives that are delivering results. I hope that this will resonate with Kamloops voters,” said Grewal. “Because like I said, nothing gives me more joy than working with people and coming up with solutions to the problems and I intend to be that strong advocate. I will always continue to love this community and serve to the best of my ability.”
