KAMLOOPS — RCMP are hoping the public can help identify a woman suspected of defrauding an elderly couple in Kamloops earlier this month.

On June 12, 2024, Kamloops RCMP say officers were told of a scam in which two people lost thousands of dollars. Police say the couple had been contacted by someone who was crying on June 11, stating he was their son and that he had been arrested and was in jail with his lawyer.

RCMP say a person posing as the lawyer spoke to the victims over the phone, then the caller instructed them to give bail money to a woman who would arrive at their home.

Later, the victims received another call requesting more money be sent by e-transfer. But police say the bank recognized the scam and prevented the transaction from going through.

“Since then, police have acquired security video of the woman who collected the cash,” Cpl. Crystal Evelyn says in a news release issued Wednesday (June 26). “We are releasing a suspect photo to the public in the hopes that someone will have information, or more clearer images available of her, to help further the investigation.”

The suspect is described as a white woman with dark hair tied in a ponytail. She was dressed in a white sweatshirt, dark leggings, white sneakers and a black cross-body bag.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Kamloops RCMP.
