LAC LA HACHE, B.C. — At least 17 patients were sent to hospital by ambulance following Friday’s (June 21) school bus collision near Lac La Hache.

Cpl. Melissa Jongema of BC Highway Patrol told CFJC Today that number does not include any passengers with minor injuries who may have been driven to hospital by family. Jongema adds there is no update on the patients’ exact injuries, but there have been no further fatalities regarding bus passengers.

RCMP say a pedestrian was killed at the scene on Highway 97 at Butler Road in Lac La Hache just before 1:00 p.m. Friday after the school bus careened down an embankment. Police say the pedestrian was struck by a vehicle.

“Witnesses have stated that the pedestrian was crossing the road to help. The cause is still under investigation and we are still looking for pre-collision driving behaviour for either incident,” Jongema says.

RCMP say there were more than 30 people on the bus, which was returning to the 100 Mile House area after a field trip in Williams Lake. Highway 97 was still closed into Friday evening as investigators processed the scene.

Jongema says BC Highway Patrol hopes to have another update on the two collisions Wednesday.
