PETERS: A farewell to fireworks

Jun 21, 2024 | 12:30 PM

IF YOU WERE LOOKING FORWARD TO a big fireworks display from Riverside Park on Canada Day, this will be another year of disappointment.

It’s not a budget crunch or the COVID-19 pandemic that’s cancelling the show this year. It’s the drought conditions the B.C. Interior has experienced for a couple of years now.

It’s not that a fireworks display could not be carried out safely this year.

Part of this decision is Kamloops Fire Rescue’s effort to make a point — that the drought conditions should cause everyone to change their behaviour.

Activities we might have taken for granted before — lighting campfires, discarding cigarette butts and, yes, fireworks — need a second thought.

Personally, and this may not be a popular opinion, I’d be fine if we have seen our last Canada Day fireworks display in Kamloops.

There is a stark difference in the quality between our fireworks display and those seen in U.S. cities — and that difference is money.

If we are not going to put thousands or hundreds of thousands more dollars into our displays then they will remain at the same level — and once you’ve seen one display at that level, you’ve seen them all.

Another reason to give fireworks their final salute is the impact on animals, both domestic and wild.

We all know someone who has a dog or cat who get completely dismayed by fireworks every time they ignite.

According to U.S. Humane Society, countless people have lost their frightened pets when they have run off aimlessly and become lost.

Not only that, wild animals like eagles have even been known to abandon their nests.

The organization recommends organizers replace fireworks with colourful drone displays.

That’s what Kamloops is doing this year, and creative replacements like these should become the norm in years to come.
