Final B.C. snow survey of 2024 sets stage for another summer of drought

VICTORIA — The last Snow Survey and Water Supply Bulletin from the province’s River Forecast Centre is once again painting a picture of drought across B.C.

The bulletin was released Thursday (June 20). It shows B.C. with 38 per cent of its average high elevation snowpack remaining for this time of year.

While that is well below normal, it is significantly higher than the same time in 2023, when snowpack dwindled to 4 per cent of normal.

In the North Thompson basin, the snow level is 42 per cent of normal. The South Thompson is at 69 per cent of normal — one of the highest readings in the province.

The BC River Forecast Centre notes by mid-June, about three-quarters of the accumulated snowpack has melted. This year is very close to that rate, at 79 per cent of the snowpack melted.

While conditions are present for another summer drought, the province notes the weather in the coming weeks and months will be a major factor in if that drought occurs.
