Barnhartvale, Aberdeen Glen Village next for free cedar chipping

KAMLOOPS — The City of Kamloops is offering free cedar hedge chipping to two more Kamloops neighbourhoods.

In a news release, the city says residents of Aberdeen Glen Village on Howe Road in Aberdeen can have chipping done next Thursday (June 27). Because the neighbourhood is comparitively small, Kamloops Fire Rescue (KFR) says there is no need to limit the number of participants.

KFR says the Aberdeen Glen Village is at particularly high risk of wildfire “due to its proximity to green space and types of building construction.”

The second neighbourhood eligible for cedar hedge chipping is Barnhartvale. KFR will take the first 20 registrants from Barnhartvale with cedar hedges and will deal with their hedges on July 23.

Property owners are asked to remove the hedges and leave them at the edge of their properties.

KFR has already offered free cedar hedge chipping in Juniper Ridge and Rose Hill, and says it went well.

“The initial offer of free chipping in Rose Hill and Juniper Ridge was fully subscribed,” said KFR Life and Safety Educator Jeff Pont. “We recognize the demand for this service and are committed to extending it to additional at-risk areas, contingent upon budget and capacity.”
