Runway facelift, lighting upgrades complete for South Cariboo Regional Airport

108 MILE HOUSE, B.C. — Upgrades for the South Cariboo Regional Airport have wrapped up, with the newly resurfaced runway in operation.

According to a release from the Cariboo Regional District, it was the first overhaul of the asphalt surfaces in two decades.

The work undertaken for the airport’s facelift included repaving the airport runway and surrounding taxi areas, and lighting upgrades. The airport is mostly used by recreational pilots, BC Wildfire, RCMP, and BC Emergency Health Service air ambulances.

Electoral Area Director for Area G, Al Richmond, who is also the Chair of the South Cariboo Regional Airport Commission, noted in the release that the runway surface was in such rough shape it had reached the point where air ambulance jets were no longer going to be able to use the airport for medical evacuation.

“These aircraft will now be able to continue to offer vital services to the residents through the South Cariboo Regional Airport,” he states.

Upgrades were paid for using provincial and federal grant funding. Including $1.45 million from the BC Growing Communities Fund, $1 million from the federal Community Works Funding, and $2 million from the BC Air Access Program. The District says rest of the costs were financed through short-term borrowing which will be paid back through taxation over the next five years.
