SIMPCW — The Canadian government is putting $5.8 million towards building more than a dozen homes at the Simpcw First Nation near Barriere.

The plan is to build five tri-plexes, creating 15 homes for band members. Each tri-plex will have two 3-bedroom units, and one 2-bedroom accessible unit.

The homes are part of the band’s community enhancement project, Nek̓úsem re Kwséltkten-kt, which means, ‘We are One Family’.

In a release, the federal government says the funding comes from the Rapid Housing Initiative, along with $2 million from Simpcw, and $1.9 million from the Simpcw Resources Group.

“These 15 new housing units represent a significant achievement for Simpcw,” states Kukpi7 George Lampreau, “We deeply appreciate the partnership with Canada through the Ministry of Housing and the financial contributions from Simpcw Resource Group that made this development possible. This initiative enables families to return to Simpcw and live in high-standard, environmentally sustainable, and affordable homes.”

Construction is nearly wrapped up, and residents are expected to start moving in after July 1.
