COLLINS: If your principles are compromised, what kind of person are you?

IT DOES NOT LOOK GOOD for the BC United party as we get closer to the October provincial election. The party has failed to capture the imagination of voters while the newly rejuvenated BC Conservative party is polling almost as strong as the NDP. Some very prominent BC United MLAs are defecting to the Conservatives, saying it’s the only way to prevent the NDP from gaining another four years in power.

But I question the value of giving up your principles for the sake of expediency. When you compromise your principles, in my view, you become a lesser person. To know you have sacrificed what you believe in just so you can be elected is a betrayal of your integrity.

Elenore Sturko, BC United’s spokesperson for addiction, mental health issues and the LBGTQ+ issues, has been critical of Conservative viewpoints on gender issues. Now that she’s defecting, does that criticism just go away? Do they now embrace the same philosophy?

The defections of Sturko and the Cariboo’s Lorne Doerksen may not be the last. If there are more defections, they will probably happen quickly, because there are already a number of Conservative candidates in place. Even Sturko will have to run in a different riding than the one she now represents.

To this point, our two Kamloops MLAs are staying with BC United. And I commend Peter Milobar and Todd Stone for staying the course. If they are defeated in October, they will have stayed with the principles they believe in. And that is important. Can you trust someone who is only a fair-weather friend?

I have always considered myself in the middle of the political spectrum. I have had enough of all the NDP’s blustering and promising, followed by a paucity of action. The Conservative platform on the party website contains virtually nothing of substance. It is full of promises with no plan on how they will be carried out. The promises are contradictory in a few cases, and to vote for those policies based on what I see so far is like following the trail of the Fool’s Gold instead of the real thing.

I think my principles and integrity are worth much more than simply winning an election. Surely, we are better than that.

I’m Doug Collins and that’s One Man’s Opinion.
