KAMLOOPS — It was a low scoring affair at Dearborn Ford Field at Norbrock Stadium on Friday night (May 31), as the Kamloops NorthPaws opened the 2024 WCL season by welcoming the Victoria HarbourCats to the tournament capital.

It would be the visitors to strike first in the top of the 3rd, as Jake Haggard would double home the opening run of the ballgame before being thrown out attempting to stretch the extra-base hit into a triple to end the frame.

The ‘Paws would respond in the bottom half with the Kamloops connection playing a staring role. Kamloops’ own and TRU WolfPack player Nolan Austin would reach first thanks to a error, brining fellow Kamloops native Manny Recchi to the dish with one out. Recchi would battle all the way back from an 0-2 count to a 3-2 count, before depositing a baseball over the right field wall for a two-run homerun.

All the scoring in the ballgame would come in that third inning with the final being 2-1.

TRU WolfPack pitcher Kolby Luckinchuk got the start, going four innings of one run ball, striking out six. Derek Murphy would earn the win in relief with Cade Webber shutting the door in the ninth for the save.

The NorthPaws and HarbourCats play again Saturday night from Kamloops, first pitch set for 6:35.
