KAMLOOPS — A new scholarship will help memorialize a Valleyview Secondary student whose life was cut short in a vehicle collision earlier this week.

Eighteen-year-old Jakob Gottfriedson was killed Saturday (May 25) when the vehicle he was driving left the East Trans Canada Highway and struck a utility pole.

Now, the BC Interior Community Foundation has established the Jakob Gottfriedson Memorial Award, which will raise money for a scholarship for graduating Valleyview students.

In a news release issued Wednesday afternoon (May 29), organizer and family friend Sarah Thomas says kindness toward others was part of what made Jakob special.

“Jakob’s warmth and compassion touched the lives of many, embracing people from all walks of life with open arms,” said Thomas. “His kindness knew no bounds, and he was a beacon of inclusion, ensuring that no one felt overlooked or undervalued. Jakob’s legacy is woven with threads of empathy and understanding, leaving an indelible mark on those fortunate enough to have crossed his path.”
