Strike at Kamloops Hudson’s Bay ends after 164 days

May 22, 2024 | 4:47 PM

KAMLOOPS — One-hundred-sixty-four days after workers at Hudson’s Bay in Kamloops walked off the job, the strike has come to an end, according to the United Steelworkers 1-417 representative, Jordan Lawrence.

The strike began on December 10, 2023 and recently saw a provincially appointed mediator step in to assist the two sides in reaching an agreement.

The mediator was assigned to work with The Bay and the United Steelworkers Local 1-417 for 14 days beginning on May 3. B.C.’s Minister of Labour Harry Bains appointed David Schaub for the role.

The strike had been impacting 50 employees, the majority of whom work part-time at the store.

The main issue during negotiations was wages, with the union rejecting a 1 per cent yearly increase back in January. The terms of the new deal are not known.

It’s unclear when the doors will reopen in Kamloops.

More information is expected on Thursday (May 23).
