WATCH: Thousands gallup into the Interior for the 104th Falkland Stampede

FALKLAND, B.C. — For the past 104 years, Falkland has hosted its historic rodeo. The three-day Falkland Stampede is one of the longest consecutive professional rodeos in Canada and ranks in calibre among the top 12 in the country.

Whether it’s become a family tradition or something different to do with friends on the weekend, it’s fair to say the Falkland Stampede holds a lot of history.

“It started in 1919, just as a little picnic with some people getting on some unbroken horses, riding them across the field,” explained Melissa Seaman, the rodeo manager. “Now we’re a Canadian professional rodeo and we see almost 12,000 people over the weekend — so it’s definitely grown since then.”

And its goal is to raise money for the community.

“This is our biggest fundraiser of the year for our community association. It keeps our community association running all year, so it pays for things like our community hall, our skating rink, the rodeo grounds itself. And then we give back to other local nonprofits in town,” said Seaman.

However, the rodeo is not the only thing that brings people to the Stampede.

“Honestly, I just really like being around people. I really like anything that will bring people together, especially outside. And it’s a nice, fun atmosphere,” said Nicole Perry, one of the many attendees on Saturday (May 18).

“I’m really looking forward to getting some food because it’s kind of hard to match rodeo food, honestly,” said Diego Machado.

“It’s a good community. It’s always fun, and it’s just like a beautiful place to be on May long.”

“The food. The food is good, great barbecue!”

For those who are thinking about coming to the next year’s Falkland Stampede, attendees left some advice.

“Show up early!”

“Get on the horse and ride.”
