TORONTO — Penny Oleksiak captured the women’s 50-metre freestyle event at the Olympic & Paralympic Trials on Sunday.

Oleksiak posted a time of 25.06 seconds, going over the Olympic qualifying standard of 24.70 seconds. It was, however, a personal best for the Toronto native.

Taylor Ruck of Kelowna, B.C., was second, touching the wall in 25.08 seconds.

Oleksiak failed to get under the qualifying and Olympic consideration times in the women’s 200 freestyle Tuesday in finishing ninth.

On Friday, the seven-time Olympic medallist won the 100 freestyle while just missing the qualifying time but easily getting under the consideration time.

That performance allowed the 23-year-old Oleksiak the chance to compete for the 4×100 freestyle relay team at the Paris Olympics.
