OPEN DRUG USE

Kamloops RCMP looking into new strategies after re-criminalization of public drug use

May 15, 2024 | 5:45 PM

KAMLOOPS — Late last month, the province of B.C. announced plans to recriminalize public use of drugs. On May 7, the federal government approved the B.C. request for an exemption to its decriminalization pilot, with the ban taking effect immediately.

Kamloops had previously been on the forefront of calls to change the legislation with council asking the province to limit drug use in public parks.

With the ban being established last week, the local Mounties are getting new instructions on how they can deal with public drug use. Kamloops’ top cop noted the force is still working through that very process.

“There is more information forthcoming with respect to open drug use,” said RCMP Supt. Jeff Pelley. “As I’ve stated with respect to that, the three areas that we are not able to seize drugs have been outlined. And again, we are looking at some strategies with respect to how we are going to address this. Our goal isn’t to charge individuals unless it’s associated to a number of other crimes, but focus on how we can make it better within our community.”
