KAMLOOPS — The former chancellor at Thompson Rivers University (TRU) will retain his title as an honour.

Nathan Matthew will be conferred with the title of chancellor emeritus during TRU’s spring convocation.

The former longtime Kúkwpi7 (chief) of Simpcw First Nation served in the role as TRU’s chancellor from 2018 to 2024. Former educator and Esk’etemc First Nation member DeDe DeRose succeeded as TRU’s chancellor on March 1.

In a news release issued Tuesday (May 14), TRU credits Matthew for teaching the university community about Secwépemc values. The Chu Chua resident has been a longtime education advocate, previously serving as TRU’s first executive director of Aboriginal Education, and as a member of the Assembly of First Nations Chief Committee on Education.
