THREAT OF THUNDERSTORM

Potential for dry lightning in Kamloops as storm passes through southeast BC

KAMLOOPS — As the BC Wildfire Service battles a number of large fires in the northeast of the province, the southeast and areas around Kamloops are preparing for a brief storm that could bring some lightning with it.

Environment Canada says the latest weather system expected to hit the region is caused by an upper air disturbance. With that storm, which should pass through the area on Monday, is a chance for a thunderstorm or potentially dry lightning. But the forecasting service says it’s likely the majority of the storm will miss Kamloops and be more focused towards Revelstoke.

“At this moment, we have a generally low risk of thunderstorm for the Kamloops area,” said Environment Canada Meteorologist Ken Dosanjh. “We are forecasting some lightning strikes associated with it but so far, the threat for Kamloops in itself looks pretty small at this point. Be on the lookout for lightning strikes here or there, but don’t be surprised if nothing happens for today.”

The start of May has been exceptionally dry for the region, with yesterday’s light rain not even registering for Environment Canada who confirmed the city has received 0.0 millimetres of rain thus far, putting the Tournament Capital in a similar position to last year.

“The average for last May is 3.4 degrees above seasonal, for the mean temperature. It was pretty warm last year but also it was dry. Kamloops saw a total of 18.6 millimetres of rainfall last year. On average for Kamloops, it’s looking like typically [you] get around 27 millimetres,” stated Dosanjh.
