KAMLOOPS — There was no significant overnight growth to the seven-hectare Lauder Creek fire, which was discovered on Friday (May 10) burning east of the northern tip of Nicola Lake.

Nicole Bonnett, a fire information officer for the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS), told CFJC Today on Saturday (May 11) the fire is considered Rank 1 or 2 — a smouldering ground fire, with minimal activity and minimal open flame.

She said crews worked late into Friday night and will continue working through Saturday to fight the fire.

BCWS and Upper Nicola Band crews and a helicopter have been assigned to fight the fire.

The fire is classified as out of control, but that designation in this case does not indicate its behaviour.

“Oftentimes, people hear out of control and they think it’s a really big, raging, Rank 6 fire, but that’s not it at all,” Bonnett said. “It’s just about the fact there is not containment established all the way around the fire perimeter at this point in time.”

Crews are working to establish hose lay around the fire perimeter, said Bonnett.

BCWS says the fire was caused by human activity.
