New wildfire pops up Friday between Kamloops and Merritt, spreads to 7 ha

KAMLOOPS — Temperatures have hit spring highs in the Kamloops area — and wildfire activity wasn’t far behind.

The fire is located at Lauder Creek, east of the northern tip of Nicola Lake.

The B.C. Wildfire Service (BCWS) says the fire was discovered Friday (May 10) and is estimated at seven hectares as of Friday evening.

BCWS says the fire was caused by human activity and is out of control.

There are already 120 active wildfires in B.C., though 111 of them are considered under control. Ten new fires were discovered in the past 24 hours.
