KAMLOOPS — The provincial government is pumping $8 million into an expansion at the Tolko Heffley Creek mill.

In a news release, Jobs, Economic Development and Innovation Minister Brenda Bailey says the funds will help build a new facility that will house an engineered wood products factory.

In addition to plywood, the mill plans to produce “specialty, industrial and engineered wood products” to support “new home construction, as well as commercial, furniture, millwork, door and window, and non-residential building systems.”

Bailey says once it is built, the project will create 20 new jobs and help secure the 250 jobs that already exist in the Heffley Creek operation.

“We’re taking action to support innovative manufacturing companies using new technology to diversify their operations and get the most value out of every tree harvested,” said Bailey. “By supporting advanced engineered wood products, we’re seeing companies protect and create the good, family-supporting jobs that are a part of our Industrial Blueprint ensuring the stronger, cleaner economic future of B.C.”

“Tolko’s history began, and remains, strongly rooted in B.C. For over 65 years, we’ve continued to innovate and grow, and through this expansion, we’re proud to not only build on our suite of value-added products, but also support associated jobs through the integration of our business,” said Tolko President and CEO Brad Thorlakson. “Today’s announcement is testament to our government’s commitment to innovation and the forest products industry and we’re thankful for their support.”
