Man arrested after rash of assaults on bystanders in Merritt

KAMLOOPS — RCMP in Merritt say that community was hit with a string of violent incidents Wednesday (May 8) — and they believe one man was responsible.

In a news release, Sgt. Brock Hedrick says police in the community responded to no fewer than eight separate incidents in the downtown core on Wednesday between 1:30 and 9:30 p.m.

Hedrick says a man was reported to be assaulting innocent bystanders. No one was seriously injured.

Police located and arrested Kevin Edward Young, 35, in the Diamondvale neighbourhood.

Hedrick says Young is well known to the local detachment.

The man is now facing 12 new charges:

• Assault (x4)
• Uttering Threats (x3)
• Breach (x4)
• Mischief (x1)

Young is being held in custody for his next court date, which is set for May 13.
