Kamloops MLA Todd Stone moves private members bill tackling foreign interference
VICTORIA, B.C —.On Wednesday, Kamloops South Thompson MLA Todd Stone introduced a private members bill in the legislature to combat foreign interference in B.C.’s elections and universities.
“Foreign interference poses a significant threat to the integrity of elections, universities, democratic institutions, and processes. It’s critical that we take action to ensure the political landscape of British Columbia remains under the control of its residents,” Stone stated. “For years, existing gaps in our election laws have been overlooked by the NDP. This bill modernizes and strengthens our laws to better counteract foreign influences in our political and educational systems.”
According to Stone, the bill looks to ban foreign-funded individuals and organizations from disseminating false or misleading information related to elections, along with also banning contributions for election related activities from foreign nationals, governments or political entities.
“British Columbians are increasingly concerned about the risks of foreign interference and expect immediate action to address these risks in our electoral and educational systems,” added Stone.
