Kamloops Blazers defenseman Brunicke wins World U18 gold

FINLAND — Kamloops Blazers defenseman Harrison Brunicke is returning home from the IIHF U18 World Championship with a gold medal draped around his neck.

Brunicke and Team Canada defeated the USA on Sunday (May 5) morning 6-4.

The Canadians battled back from a 3-1 deficit, not leading in the contest until 13:00 minute mark of the final frame. The offensive hero was Gavin McKenna who netted a hat trick including the tying goal in the third period.

Brunicke was held off the scoresheet in the gold medal game but did post a +1 rating in 19:25 of ice-time. Over the seven undefeated games for Canada, the Blazers’ D-man recorded four points (1G, 3A) and a +11.

Along with Brunicke, Blazers goaltender coach Dan De Palma earned a gold as a member of Team Canada’s coaching staff.
