Non-profit group collecting and recycling scrap tires as Kamloops residents swap out winter tires

KAMLOOPS — A tire collection event is coming to Kamloops just as residents in and around the city prepare to swap out their winter tires for the summer.

Tire Stewardship BC will set up shop at the Kal Tire on 788 Mount Paul Way on Saturday, May 11 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

In a news release, the environmental non-profit group dedicated to collecting and recycling scrap tires in B.C. says residents drop off old or unused tires, on or off rim, that may be lying around backyards and gardens, free of charge.

“With fire season upon us, it is important not to leave old or unused tires lying around at home,” Rosemary Sutton, Tire Stewardship BC’s executive director says. “They can also become a breeding ground for mosquitoes once rainwater collects inside. We encourage any resident with tires lying around their property to either drop them off at one of our collection events this spring or summer, or to search for a return-to-retailer location on our website and drop them off at any point throughout the year at a location that is convenient for them.”

Once tires are collected, Tire Stewardship BC says they’re recycled and turned into new, useful products such as playground surfaces, athletic tracks and business flooring and roofing. Rubber and steel are also recovered in the tire recycling process.

Winter tires or chains are required on most B.C. highways from Oct. 1 to April 30. However, for some highways not located through mountain passes or high snowfall areas, tire and chain requirements end March 31.
