Thousands without power in the North Shuswap Friday morning

UPDATE (11:30 a.m.): Crews are still trying to fully restore power in and around Merritt.

BC Hydro says a power outage is impacting 237 customers south of Merritt.

Meantime, power was restored for thousands of residents in the Shuswap.

UPDATE (9:30 a.m.): Power has been restored for more than 1,000 residents in the Shuswap.

However, BC Hydro says 1,651 customers in the North Shuswap communities of Anglemont, Celista and Magna Bay will be without power until 11 a.m.

Meantime, the power outage near Merritt now only affects 930 customers. DriveBC notes power is out along the Coquihalla Highway from Hope to Merritt, meaning all rest areas are closed.

There’s still no estimated time for power to be restored near Merritt.

UPDATE (7:30 a.m.): A power outage is also impacting multiple BC Hydro customers in Merritt Friday morning.

BC Hydro says 1,707 customers in an area covering nearly half of Merritt, Aspen Grove and Brookmere have been without power since around 5:30 a.m. Friday.

BC Hydro states the outage is due to equipment failure. Crews are on site but there’s no estimated time for power to be restored.

Meantime, power for customers east of Tappen is estimated to be restored at around 9:30 a.m. Friday.

EARLIER: SCOTCH CREEK, B.C. — Thousands of residents in the Shuswap have woken without power Friday (April 26) morning.

BC Hydro says 472 customers near Lee Creek and 2,845 customers in Scotch Creek, Celista, Magna Bay and Anglemont have been without power since 4 a.m. Friday. Further south, 756 customers east of Tappen have been without power since around 4:45 a.m.

Crews are on site in the North Shuswap and power is expected to be restored at around 8:30 a.m. However, crews are still en route to the outage east of Tappen.

All three outage causes are still under investigation.
