Kamloops council to consider pushing KFR Medical Response Unit back to province

Apr 22, 2024 | 6:15 PM

KAMLOOPS — Last month, during the supplemental budget process for the City of Kamloops, a new medical response vehicle for Kamloops Fire Rescue was denied.

The move to deny by council was not to say the proposed SUV was not needed, but that it felt it wasn’t the municipality’s — and therefore the Kamloops taxpayers’ — responsibility to bear.

Figures from KFR show 67 per cent of responses in 2023 through to the third quarter were medical in nature, and that has put the proposal back on the desks of council this week, but with the ask to send the bill to the province.

“It was sent back at budget time to go back to the Safety and Security Select Committee for us to work with them on how they wanted to approach it,” said KFR Chief Ken Uzeloc. “We had a great meeting last week. I’m hopeful that council will see the idea to push this to the province and see what the province might have to say about it, and we will take it from there.”

The regular meeting of council begins Tuesday (April 23) afternoon at 1:30 p.m.
