First major wildfire of 2024 grows to 1,600 ha south of Quesnel

UPDATE (Monday): The Cariboo Regional District (CRD) issued an evacuation alert for six rural properties south of Quesnel at 7:45 p.m. Sunday.

The CRD states an evacuation alert is issued to give residents time to prepare to evacuate their premises or property should it be required. Residents will be given as much advance notice as possible if an evacuation order is required. Although the CRD says it may not have time to go door-to-door due to changing conditions.

EARLIER: QUESNEL, B.C. β€” It’s not even May, but the 2024 B.C. wildfire season is well underway.

The first major, out-of-control wildfire of the season has now grown to 1,600 hectares, according to the B.C. Wildfire Service (BCWS).

The Burgess Creek wildfire was discovered Saturday (Apr. 20). It is located about 45 kilometres south of Quesnel, northwest of Ben Lake and east of Highway 97.

The Cariboo Regional District does not list any emergency alerts or evacuation notices for this or any fire on its website.
