KAMLOOPS — In the spirit of Earth Day, the City of Kamloops will be hosting its first Clean the Beach event from Riverside Park on Sunday (April 21).

The goal is to get as many volunteers out as possible to grab garbage and other items littered along the riverbanks near Riverside Park out to Overlanders Beach and the shoreline along Schubert Drive.

“We wanted to host it close to being in coordination with Earth Day, which is the following day on April 22, so we’ll be out here on Sunday, April 21,” explains the city’s social and community development supervisor Ty Helgason. “Hopefully, [we’ll be] getting the beaches cleaned up and preventing things from getting into the river as it rises.”

People who want to take part are asked to wear closed-toed shoes and dress for the weather. The city will be providing clean-up supplies, including gloves, garbage pickers, sharps containers and more.

“Registering beforehand is an option on the website — that’s kamloops.ca/cleanthebeach. But that is purely just to help us understand how many folks we might see,” adds Helgason. “We have already seen a lot of registrations so we’re actually having to order more clean up materials, which is awesome.”

Clean the Beach begins at 11:00 a.m. Sunday, April 21 from Riverside Park, with a wrap-up event to follow featuring a bouncy castle, face-painting, live music and a volunteer BBQ.
