6 former Mississippi law officers to be sentenced in state court for torture of 2 Black men
JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Already sentenced to federal prison, the first of six former Mississippi law enforcement officers has been sentenced on state charges for his part in torturing two Black men.
Brett McAlpin, who was the fourth highest-ranking officer in the Rankin County Sheriff’s Office, was sentenced in state court Wednesday to 20 years in prison, weeks after he was sentenced by a federal judge to about 27 years of imprisonment.
Rankin County Circuit Judge Steve Ratcliff is sentencing all six defendants on state charges Wednesday.
Time served for the state convictions will run at the same time as the federal sentences, and the former officers will serve their time in federal penitentiaries.
