Kamloops Sports Council presents athletics awards; Hall of Fame inductees honoured

KAMLOOPS — The Kamloops Sports Council handed out its athletic awards for 2023 on Saturday (April 6) night at the Colombo Lodge.

The South Kamloops Titans’ senior boys’ volleyball team was named team of the year, most notably for winning the first senior boys’ provincial high school volleyball title in the history of the city.

Their coach, Graham MacGregor, was named coach of the year.

Hammer thrower Ethan Katzberg of the Kamloops Track and Field Club and goaltender Kendra Woodland of the New Brunswick Reds were named male and female athlete of the year, respectively.

TRU WolfPack defender Raiya Rumo — the first Canada West first-team all-star in the history of the women’s soccer program — won the University Award.

Former Kamloops Blazers’ forward Logan Stankoven nabbed the International Excellence Award. He won the World Junior Hockey Championship with Team Canada.

The Award of Excellence was given to the Kamloops Canoe and Kayak Club, whose athletes enjoyed success at national and provincial levels.

Memorial Cup host committee co-chairs Yves Lacasse and Norm Daley shared the Sportsperson of the Year Award.

Linda Bolton and Brenda Nordin — who co-chaired the Scotties Tournament of Hearts — received the President’s Award for their roles in organizing curling events in the city.

Meanwhile, the Kamloops Sports Hall of Fame welcomed new inductees.

Taking their places in the Hall were athlete and sports promoter KJ Klontz, distance runner and curler Randy Nelson, the late Jim Roode, a volunteer and former Kamloops Minor Hockey Association president, and the 1972-73 North Kamloops Kinsmen Bantam Hockey Team.
