Council asked to scratch Kamloops marquee sign project, allow city staff to come back with revised plan

KAMLOOPS — A plan to create a marquee sign in the City of Kamloops is down but not out.

During their regular meeting Tuesday (April 9). Kamloops council will be asked to cancel the initial marquee sign project that was approved in the 2023 city budget.

However, council is being recommended to allow city staff to work with Tourism Kamloops and Tk’emlups te Secwepemc to bring back a revised plan. The plan would need to include a complete concept and design, budget, schedule and third-party funding.

The location of the proposed sign would be determined by council once the revised plan is presented. Originally, staff from the city, Tk’emlups and Tourism Kamloops selected Riverside Park to host the original marquee sign.

The current budget for the project is $150,000, with $120,000 funded by the city through its Gaming Reserve. Due to shifting timelines, Tourism Kamloops reallocated the $30,000 provincial grant to a different local project but will provide $30,000 from an alternate, less time-sensitive funding source. The city says $90,000 would be returned to the Gaming Reserve so it can go toward other projects.
