KAMLOOPS — Construction is underway for a child care facility at Station Plaza in downtown Kamloops.

In a news release issued Tuesday (April 2) morning, the City of Kamloops says it’s going forward with the 36-space child care facility at 510 Lorne St. after its successful application for a ChildCareBC New Spaces Fund grant. The grant is supported by federal and provincial funding.

The Lorne Street Child Care Centre will focus on the families of City of Kamloops employees, with the remaining spots being available for other families in the community. City employees will also pay market rate.

“With the much-appreciated ChildCareBC New Spaces Fund, offering access to child care is now a cost-effective way for the City to maintain and attract the workforce we need to provide core services to Kamloops residents,” stated Colleen Quigley, the city’s human resources and safety director. “As we work to assess and meet the needs of City employees, the needs of the broader community have been a key consideration. Spots unfilled by City employees will be available to other families in the community, and the overall increase in local child care capacity is a win for everyone.”

The city says an employee needs assessment it conducted showed that 45 per cent of respondents with children had challenges finding adequate child care.

The Lorne Street Child Care Centre will be run by the non-profit Saltair Childcare Society. The centre will have 12 spaces for children aged 30 months and younger and 24 spaces for children aged 30 months to school age.

The city expects to hold a grand opening near August 1, 2024.
