Prescribed burn expected to start in Williams Lake Community Forest over the weekend
WILLIAMS LAKE, B.C. — A prescribed burn within the Williams Lake Community Forest is expected to begin over the long weekend.
Starting Saturday (March 30) and continuing periodically until April 4, the BC Wildfire Service says 40 hectares in total will be burned in the forest nearly 10 kilometres west of Williams Lake beside the Fraser River.
“This burn is the continuation of a spacing treatment that was previously completed to reduce stand density and create a more open and fire-resilient forest,” the wildfire service states. “The objective of the prescribed burn is to consume ground fuel and promote the growth of local plant species while reducing wildfire risk.”
It’s the third prescribed burn in the Williams Lake area scheduled to begin in March. A near 40-hectare burn is planned for along Highway 20 near Williams Lake while two burns covering 10 hectares were planned within city limits.
