TK’EMLUPS — Tke̓mlúps te Secwépemc and the Catholic Church will take a step forward on Truth and Reconciliation on Easter Sunday.

In a news release issued Thursday (March 28), Tke̓mlúps, the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Vancouver and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Kamloops announced they will sign a new Sacred Covenant on Sunday, March 31.

The document will outline a historical record and share archives and records in Catholic possession. Further commitments include:

  • finding fitting ways to memorialize the children of residential schools
  • sharing information and having full transparency to identify and determine the truth related to missing children
  • Catholic parties offering and supporting healing services for family members and others whose loved ones attended the former Kamloops Indian Residential School

Kukpi7 Rosanne Casimir and Tk’emlups leadership have been negotiating with the Roman Catholic Church about having access to historical records of Catholic-run Indian Residential Schools. Casimir says to bring justice to Le Estcwicwey – the missing children of the residential school system – they need to identify who they are.

A joint statement regarding the Sacred Covenant signing, along with photos from the private events, will be shared on Monday, April 1.
