KAMLOOPS PARK UPGRADES

Pioneer Park upgrades and utility work breaking ground this week

KAMLOOPS — The City of Kamloops is giving visitors to Pioneer Park a heads up that over the next several weeks, a myriad of upgrade work will be happening.

Phase one began this week which includes resurfacing of parking areas, a new lighting. The main parking lot will be closed for this phase, along with the washrooms, but the rest of the park will stay open.

Capital Projects Manager Matt Kachel says construction on this section is expected to wrap up by May.

“Phase Two, we’ll move on to the multi-use path which is going to happen behind me here and connect Rivers Trail through to the east and west sides, and we’re also going to replace the water main that runs along 7th Avenue, and some service connections along there,” explains Kachel.

During Phase Two, there may be intermittent disruptions to traffic through the area, but the bulk of the park space is expected to stay open. Parkgoers are asked to pay attention to signage, and keep out of work areas for the time being.

“The reason we split it into two phases is being aware that people want to get out and use the park,” adds Kachel, “Easier for us would just be to close it right down and just get our project done but we know that’s not going to be acceptable, so the splitting of the phasing is really just to accommodate so that people can use as much of the park as possible.”

The second phase of Pioneer Park utility work is scheduled to be completed in October of this year.
