TNRD rolling out FireSmart Home Assessments as spring starts

Mar 18, 2024 | 11:18 AM

KAMLOOPS — With spring a day away, the Thompson-Nicola Regional District is encouraging residents to receive a free FireSmart Home Assessment.

In a news release issued Monday (March 18), the TNRD says a FireSmart Coordinator can assess the wildfire risks to homes and properties within the district’s 10 electoral areas and make recommendations on how to make them more resilient. The TNRD says residents who live in a municipality or First Nations within the district’s boundaries must contact their local governments regarding FireSmart programs.

“Many tasks to clean up your property and the exterior of your home are easy and highly effective to reduce the risk of wildfire impacting your property,” Kim McMillan, TNRD Lead FireSmart Coordinator says. “Areas of the Thompson-Nicola region are continuing to experience drought conditions, and it’s especially important for residents to be prepared for the risk of wildfire.”

In 2023, the TNRD says its FireSmart program completed 81 home ignition assessments. Residents can find out how to request an assessment here.
