KAMLOOPS — Residents and canines who frequent Pioneer Park in downtown Kamloops will need to plan ahead before they loosen their collars this spring.

Starting Monday (March 18), the City of Kamloops says crews will begin the first phase of the Pioneer Park Utility project. It will require a full closure of the Pioneer Park parking lot along Seventh Avenue.

In a news release, the city says Phase One will include the construction of a lit multi-use pathway within Pioneer Park, connecting the Rivers Trail from east to west, and a reconstructed parking lot with refurbished asphalt and new spaces for vehicles and boat trailers.

Along with the parking lot, the city says the adjacent pathway connected to the parking lot will be closed. There will also be closures of the washrooms and the park where the trail is being constructed.

During Phase One construction, access to Pioneer Park will be allowed from either the Rivers Trail or Seventh Avenue via Front Street or Lorne Street.

Phase One is expected to be complete by early May and then Phase Two will begin in September. The city says Phase Two construction will take nearly six weeks and focus on water main upgrades along Seventh Avenue.

Pedestrian and dog access will not be impacted but the city reminds park users to obey all signage and traffic control crews when accessing Pioneer Park.
