COLLINS: Southern evangelical Christians make a deal with the devil

Mar 10, 2024 | 6:00 AM

ACCORDING TO A COLUMN in USA Today this week, southern evangelical Christians are flocking to Donald Trump in record numbers.

Most of my life has been centered around my faith. And I have a great deal of difficulty wondering why a group of people who proclaim to believe in the Bible would align themselves with a man with such questionable morals and such egomaniacal tendencies.

Campaigning in Iowa recently, a video was shown presenting Trump as a messianic figure. Some Christians didn’t care for the video, but they obviously voted for him anyway.

In the USA Today article, columnist Chris Brennan does a great job in getting to the reasons for the “Deal with the Devil.” Brennan suggests the Evangelical Christian groups don’t seem to care what Trump does or believes, as long as he supports their views on abortion and transgender rights.

When you make a deal with Satan, you put yourself in a dangerous situation. It is hypocrisy to suggest that it’s okay to follow a man who plays on your beliefs to gain power. And don’t think Trump hasn’t used those people to mold them to his liking.

Although I disagree with some of their beliefs, they have the right to them. But there are no excuses for fighting for those rights in the way they have.

Some have suggested Trump doesn’t believe in God. I think he does, but the problem is that HE thinks he is that god.

Donald Trump has no morals. So how can Christians, whose faith is built on moral teachings, call themselves followers of Trump?

When Christ fasted in the desert, he was tempted three times by Satan, and renounced him each time. He would not make a deal. It’s too bad that these southern white evangelical church members seem to have forgotten that important story.

They face a dilemma. Follow the devil or follow Christ. It’s pretty hard to do both.

I’m Doug Collins and that’s One Man’s Opinion.
