RECOVERY FUNDING

Fraser-Nicola MLA ‘disappointed and appalled’ about recovery support for Lytton and Cache Creek

ASHCROFT, B.C. — In the past few years, no region in British Columbia has been hit by natural disasters as hard as Fraser-Nicola.

From fires to floods and rockslides, the area and its communities have been decimated by Mother Nature.

In the nearly three years since the village of Lytton was razed to the ground, limited rebuilding has taken place. While the ground is ready for new homes, MLA Jackie Tegart has questioned the government’s commitment to the region during the current budget deliberations.

“I’m just so utterly disappointed and appalled at what this government has done. And as I said in my budget response, shame on them, shame on them. They say the right things but they don’t follow through. It is unbelievable where we find the village of Lytton,” said Tegart.

Just north of Lytton, the community of Cache Creek is recovering from devastating flooding last year. Help for the community to rebuild and mitigate future disasters was something Tegart had hoped to see the government promise funding for.

“When you see disasters year after year after year, you need to realize that a small community cannot afford its 20 per cent in order to do the recovery. The other thing is, recovery needs to be building back better. We need to look at why does the water run up over the road, through the fire hall, three out of the last four or five years?” Tegart told CFJC Today. “Let’s not do the same thing again.”
