TRU Evening of Champions helps ensure the WolfPack can recruit the best in the nation

KAMLOOPS — The Thompson Rivers University (TRU) WolfPack will be holding their evening of champions on Tuesday (March 12).

The event brings together the WolfPack athletic teams, along with community members for a night of celebration. The proceeds from the event also serves to benefit future student athletes through scholarships.

“This is our most important scholarship fundraiser of the year, we lost it for a little but during the COVID years and we couldn’t do the large in-person gatherings,” Curtis Atkinson, TRU athletic director says. “So, it was really important for us to get this back, it’s an important opportunity for the community to connect with us and for us to connect with the community. Those dollars are absolutely critical in being able to recruit and retain the best student athletes. We compete against 56 other schools in this country for those student athletes and if you can’t offer adequate scholarship packages it just wont work and you won’t be competitive.”

In addition to honouring the TRU teams and the accomplishments of a number of student athletes, a keynote speech will be delivered by Kaleb Dahlgren, one of the few people on the planet who can truly understand the resilience that the entire WolfPack community showed this year in the face of unspeakable tragedy.

“A lot of people remember Kaleb because of what happened with the Humboldt Broncos bus crash and that broke the hearts of the nation and touched so many people in our country that remember that. And Kaleb has been through some other tough times in his life where he has had to make decisions on how to move forward and do it in a positive way, and that’s not always an easy thing to do,” Atkinson says. “So, it’s a lot of heaviness, but at the same time I’ve seen Kaleb speak in person and I now he delivers a positive and inspirational message.”
