Missing Merritt man victim of foul play and homicide: RCMP

MERRITT, B.C. — Police have determined a man from Merritt who’s been missing for more than a year has been murdered.

In a news release issued Thursday (Feb. 29), the BC RCMP’s Southeast District Major Crime Unit unveiled its investigation has shown the disappearance of 24-year-old Miguel Mack was due to foul play and he’s the victim of a homicide.

Following his disappearance, RCMP say there was a large-scale search of Merritt and area that used police dog services, air services, and forensic identification specialists with drones. However, Mack’s body has not been located.

RCMP state no further details can be provided to protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation.

“There are people out there with knowledge of Miguel Mack’s disappearance and we are asking those individuals to come forward and contact the police,” S/Sgt. Jason Smart states. “His disappearance and murder are senseless acts, and this investigation remains a priority… It is important to police that the person(s) responsible for his disappearance and murder be held accountable and it is even more important for Mr. Mack’s family to be provided with some semblance of closure so that they can begin to heal from this terrible ordeal.”

Mack was reported missing to police by his family on March 3, 2023, after last being seen a few days prior on Feb. 27, 2023.

Mack’s family will host a community walk Friday (March 1) at 5 p.m. starting at 2337 Coutlee Ave. then going around Merritt and ending at Spirit Square. Police say the family would appreciate anyone coming out to show their support in the search for Mack.
