KAMLOOPS — The latest figures from the BC Coroners Service on the toxic drug supply in the province show at least 198 people died in January.

“The total number of deaths in January equates to about 6.4 lives lost per day,” reads a release from the province. “Unregulated drug toxicity is the leading cause of death in British Columbia for people aged 10 to 59, accounting for more deaths than homicides, suicides, accidents and natural disease combined.”

Of the 198 deaths in January, 26 occurred within Interior Health. Broken down further, half of those deaths were in the Thompson Cariboo Shuswap Health Service Delivery Area, with 11 being classified as in Kamloops.

The 11 deaths in January come after the 84 deaths were reported throughout the entirety of 2023.
